Brief Background of the Province of Surigao del Norte
The province of Surigao del Norte is located in the Northern part of Mindanao. It’s actually considered as the gateway to Mindanao. It is made up of twenty municipalities, one city with three hundred thirty five barangays. It is divided into two congressional districts. District I comprises the islands of Siargao and Bucas Grande with nine municipalities while District II includes eleven municipalities and Surigao City. The total land area of the province is 201,710 hectares, with the mainland encompassing 138,914 hectares, and Siargao Island which measures about 62,796 hectares. It has a total population of 442,588 as of 2010. Mining is a major industry and an economic growth driver. The province has huge mineral deposits, one of the largest in the Philippines, if not in Asia. Mineral reserves register a total of 37,963.40 hectares. At present, there are six mining companies which are operating and their productsare nickel, nickel silicate ore and limestone. Other mineral products include gold, silver, chromate and ceramics. These products are sold and exported to Japan, China, Greece and Australia.
On aqua culture, the province is the supplier of vast marine products to other provinces in Mindanao. Its lobsters, prawns and crabs reaches Cebu, Manila and even abroad. Surigao del Norte gained a reputation as one of the leading tourism destination in Mindanao and the surfing capital of the Philippines and also one of the top ten best-surfing sites of the world. The province is also hosting game fishing tournament in Pilar, SiargaoIslands. It has gained a reputation as the game fishing mecca of Asia. Surigao Del Norte is also gaining a reputation as a leading tourism destination in this part of Mindanao and the surfing capital of the Philippines with its long stretches of fine white beaches, captivating caves, amazing lakes, astonishing waterfalls, beautiful rock formations and barrel-shaped surfs.
Brief Background of Surigao del Norte Police Provincial Office
With the creation of Surigao Del Norte Province or SDN, the Police Provincial office was activated on 02 January 1991 to effectively serve the needs of the people in the Maintenance of Peace and Order and the Prevention of Public Safety.
